Sethe's home is haunted by the ghost of her baby daughter, who she killed rather than allow her to be returned to slavery.

The novel explores themes of slavery, motherhood, trauma, memory, and the supernatural. Through a series of flashbacks, the reader learns about Sethe's experiences as a slave, including the brutal treatment she endured and the deep love she had for her children.

"Beloved" is a haunting and challenging novel that uses magical realism and fragmented storytelling to create a sense of the horror and psychological damage inflicted by slavery. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1988 and cemented Morrison's reputation as one of the most important and influential writers of her generation.
